Are you interested in:
- Open data – accelerating research discoveries and with the goal of improving human, societal, or environmental outcomes using open data.
- Open science – the development of algorithms, models, and software platforms, applications and tools to support open science over open data.
- Open source software – the development of open source software to support open data and open science.
In short, we are interested in the emerging field of what is being called translational data science – the discipline that uses data and data science to have a broader human or societal impact.
The Center for Translational Data Science (CTDS) at the University of Chicago and the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Open Commons Consortium (OCC) are collaborating on several projects and both are hiring and both are looking for volunteers. The OCC is a collaboration of universities, companies and not-for-profits interested in developing and operating data commons and data ecosystems to support translational data science in biology, medicine, healthcare and the environment. The University of Chicago is a member of the OCC.
Some of our past projects. The CTDS develops and operates the NCI Genomic Data Commons (GDC), one of the largest data platforms containing harmonized cancer genomic data in the world, with over 100,000 researchers using the resource each year. The OCC participates in working groups that develop and operate a number of data platforms, including the BloodPAC Data Commons (BloodPAC) for liquid biopsy data that grew out of the 2016 White House Cancer Moonshot Project.
Areas of Interest
We are hiring in a number of areas, including:
- DevOps, including DevOps for private, public and hybrid clouds
- BioOps (DevOps for biomedical data science)
- data commons, data ecosystems and the services that support them
- development of systems for high performance biomedical workflows
- development of biomedical pipelines and workflows
- security operations for data commons and data ecosystems
- security and compliance for data commons and data ecosystems, including FISMA, HIPAA and related standards
- machine learning and deep learning over the biomedical data in the platforms and ecosystems we support
- casual learning over the biomedical data in the platforms and ecosystems we support
- hybrid clouds
- cloud-based platforms for scientific computing
- related areas
Positions Available
Research Scientists. Research scientists are positions for PhD scientists interested in working on one or more projects with proven research track record.
Research Staff. Research staff are positions for those with a Bachelor’s , Masters, or PhD interested in working on one or more projects.
Post-Doc. If you have a recent PhD and are interested in a 2 or 3 year post-doc position, please contact us.
Volunteers. We are also interested in volunteers who are in a position to “pay-back” or “pay-forward” and want to get involved in one of our projects that support a particular patient community or contribute to the infrastructure that supports multiple patient communities.
Transitioning to biomedical data science. We are interested in researchers in the biological data sciences who want to transition to biomedical data science by improving their computer science and engineering skills. We are also interested in computer scientists who want to transition to biomedical data science by improving their knowledge in one or more of the biomedical data sciences.
Who are we looking for? The CTDS is a university research center and the OCC is not-for-profit. We are looking for individuals who are interested in open data, open source software, and open science to contribute to data science problems that that have a broader human or societal impact (translational data science). We are also interested in those willing to make a commitment of at least 2 years, and preferably 3 or more years. We offer competitive salaries, but it shouldn’t surprise you that industry offers higher salaries. If that is what you are looking for, please don’t contact us. We offer important problems with a high impact, a world class research environment, and a research and development group of nice, hard-working, and smart individuals.
Getting involved. If you are interested in a position at the CTDS, please contact us at: ctds-jobs at lists dot uchicago dot edu. If you are interested in a position at OCC, please contact us at: info at occ-data dot org. Principals only. If you are interested in a post-doc or volunteering, please contact Robert Grossman at his university email address.
